If You’re Happy and You Know It, Keep Your Job (Clap, Clap)
Here’s a shocking statistic I read recently: 86% of us are satisfied with our jobs. Can you believe it? Add up all the time we spend bitching about bosses, coworkers, the bitter coffee and the freezing cold break room, and I’d have pegged only a few of us for liking our gigs. In fact, I have gobs of friends working in “the real world” (as opposed to my dream life blogging, neener-neener) who routinely take mental health days and (cough, cough) turn up sick a bunch.
But no, says a Chicago university. Only a scant 14% of workers truly aren’t happy.
Are you one who isn’t? Well, hang in there if you possibly can - the same study also found that job satisfaction increases with age. Hm.
One suggestion, though: If you’re not taking your vacation days, you may be bringing your misery on yourself. More than 30% of Americans don’t use all their allotted vacation time! That’s - are you ready for this? - 574 million paid vacation days that never get used! For shame!
Do you love your job or hate it? Do you take “Mental Health Days” or call in sick just because? Weigh in and let us know…

I do love my job, but I do take mental health days (like today). Especially when I’ve reached my mandatory 40 hours well before Friday. I often work over the weekends so I have gotten better about taking afternoons off or using more of my vacation days, especially when I can tell that I will absolutely not be productive. It only takes a few 60+ hr weeks to leave me bitter, disgruntled and forgetful of the fact that I actually do like what I do.

I always thought bitching about my job, was my job. I guess I am just happy to have a job!

I *adore* my job - but that’s because I work for myself, doing what I love: writing. I have the *most* understanding boss who is just a doll. She doesn’t mind if I take naps or snuggle with my dog. If I want to work at 2 a.m., she says go for it. And - most of all, she doesn’t hang over my shoulder. Unless i was to hang a mirror on the wall office behind me. Nah -that would be creepy. :-)

I think even more people would love their jobs if they got the money they deserved. Asking for a raise or promotion isn’t always easy. Here’s a good entry about how to get that dream raise or promotion http://sdeviations.blogspot.com/2007/12/how-to-get-raise-or-promotion.html
