The Healthy Power of Happy Hour
Bottom’s Up - For Your Health!
Don’t you just love when one of your favorite “indulgences” suddenly becomes a Health All-Star? Like, in my mind, it doesn’t get much better than finding out that bellying up to the bar at Happy Hour is actually good for you. Can you relate? Yeah, thought so.
Here’s the good word on the liquid nourishment that is beer and wine: According to a study by the British Journal of Cancer, drinking beer and wine can lower your risk of kidney cancer. Now, maybe kidney cancer isn’t as high on your “To Worry About List” as say, finding matching non-holey socks in the morning, but still, isn’t it nice to know that your adult refreshments are actually working for you?
Of course, all things in moderation, dear readers, but sucking down more than two bottles of beer or glasses of wine (red or white, your choice) per week may knock your risk of developing renal-cell cancer (the most common type of kidney cancer) by 30 to 40 percent, compared with non-drinkers. Why? The cancer-fighting anti-oxidants in the beer’s yeast and the grape’s skins are working their magic as you sip away and slide into your happy place.
So the next time your best pal or love interest invites you to head out and tip some back, think of it as preventative medicine and enjoy (responsibly, of course).

Also, beer protects against the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, known to cause ulcers and possibly linked to stomach cancer. (This is mentioned in the Superfoods section of Cooking Compendium.)
