Q: What Living Tissues Are Part of the Endocrine System?
A: Your bones! Scientists have discovered that our bones may play a role in regulating metabolism and blood sugar. A hormone called osteocalcin not only regulates mineralization but also appears to regulate adipose deposits (the spare tire), insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, and pancreatic function. Many of us think of bones as being little more than inert calcium sticks, but your osseous material is living tissue that plays an important role in your overall health. To give your bones some much-needed love, aim for resistance training and weight-bearing activity two or three times a week.

Scientists have invented a bioabsorbable patch that encourages the heart to heal itself within about 30 days. Patent foramen ovale (”hole in the heart”) is a heart defect that is linked to strokes and migraines. Previously, invasive surgery was required to treat PFO. Want to see how the patch is fitted? Just LOVE that photo!
And yes, inert calcium sticks–if I thought about it at all, that’s what I thought bones were! (I should not be legally allowed to have a health blog, btw). Guess there’s no excuse for skipping the gym, then.
Great collection of stuff, thanks!

Who would have thought of maintaining bone health? Not me, but now I will. Thanks.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! (Ross: glad you’ve learned somethin’ new! FYI, walking and hiking are both great weight-bearing workouts.)
Crabby, you have pictures of cupcakes on your blog. I don’t think anyone is expecting you to be the definitive resource for all things health. Keep doing your thing! ;)
