A: Your bones! Scientists have discovered that our bones may play a role in regulating metabolism and blood sugar. A hormone called osteocalcin not only regulates mineralization but also appears to regulate adipose deposits (the spare tire), insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, and pancreatic function. Many of us think of bones as being little more than inert calcium sticks, but your osseous material is living tissue that plays an important role in your overall health. To give your bones some much-needed love, aim for resistance training and weight-bearing activity two or three times a week.

    Bones help regulate insulin? So might bone marrow be used in treating diabetes?

    And yes, inert calcium sticks–if I thought about it at all, that’s what I thought bones were! (I should not be legally allowed to have a health blog, btw). Guess there’s no excuse for skipping the gym, then.
