Woman Goes 55 Years with Pencil in Her Head

by Sara on August 7th, 2007

pencil, meet brain

A woman suffered nosebleeds and headaches for 55 years. Wouldn’t you know, a pencil was inside!

At the age of four, Margret Wegner fell on a pencil and it plunged into her skull, leaving no trace. No one dared to operate for fear of killing the child, so Margret was forced to endure terrible headaches her entire life. Alas, technology has finally freed Margret of about 3 inches of the offending pencil. A nub remains, firmly implanted inside her brain.

This is sort of like the year I lived with a piece of cedar bark inside my heel because I didn’t want to bother my parents. My friends refer to it as The Grossest Story Ever. In my defense, I was twelve. Okay, 13.

Need to be further enthralled? I thought so. Two more stories and a brain surgery video if you click. You know you want to…

The guy who had a nail in his brain!

The other guy who had a nail in his brain!

The technology that has been developed for brain surgery is actually nothing short of stunning. Check out this incredible video snippet:

Cool…that’s just crazy…you can see the brain beating.

Did you see the article last week about Deep Brain Stimulus on the guy who couldn’t talk out eat for 6 years…

I did see that, and for anyone who hasn’t be sure to click the link Brian provides. It’s pretty cool.

What is amazing is watching them remove a section of the skull. I remember reading Michael Chrichton’s book Travels, and he talks about dissecting a skull for an entire chapter (when he was in med school). It was then that I knew medical school was not for me. ;)

So I clicked on the link because I thought I would learn more about this bark in your heel…? Kidding. That is CRAZYNESS! Next time my life is going off a bit, I guess I can say “well, at least I don’t have a pencil in my brain…I’ve got THAT going for me”.

Ha, I guess that was a bit of a tease. It’s seriously, seriously disgusting and it’s just about your blogger’s foot, so I’ll have to think about how valuable that would be to all you readers. I’ll consider it, though… ;)
