The Pause Diet

I’m not a big fan of diets, I’m more of a lifestyle kind of guy. Easier said than done, though. sometimes we need a diet to get us in the right frame of mind, or just to keep things interesting. (My comrade, Scotty, is going dairy free for the hell of it this month.) Which brings me to something interesting: The Pause Diet.
I would almost consider this more of a philosophy than a diet. It involves three rules, none of which govern what you can or can’t eat.
- Pause before you eat. Give yourself time to stop the impulsive snacking and ordering of fries with bacon & cheese on them. Just think a moment before you get up to get another donut from the coffee station at work.
- Pause before your next spoonful or bite. This is as basic as it gets, and it’s a double bladed sword. By pausing between bites you allow yourself to enjoy the meal more and think about what you’re eating and why. You also slow down your overall pace allowing your body’s, “I’m feeling full” mechanism to keep up with that buffet.
- Pause halfway through what you are eating. This serves the same purpose as above. It allows your body to register the meal you’re eating, and get more out of it.
The main pitfall of this diet is that it assumes you have common sense. Taking a pause to contemplate right before you drink a coke and eat a chili-dog will not help you lose weight. Assuming that the common sense assumption is correct and you’re not a flaming moron, this diet is good stuff because it’s so super simple.
This may all seem a bit silly at first, but it’s not like you have to wear a stop watch around your neck. You can also think of it as living more deliberately. Becoming more aware of your surroundings and your internal state of affairs is always a good thing, and all you have to do is pause and think about it.
