Control Your Genetic Destiny

When was the last time you called your parents? If it’s been a while, you may want to get them on horn and quiz them about their health. It’s not like you actually care, though, (I kid) you just want to know what you’re up against.
Saying that the link between health and genetics is a powerful one would be an understatement. We all know that knowledge is power, but many of us shy away from it when it comes to health issues that hit close to home. Not knowing about your own health-related predispositions is a losing poor dying man’s game.
Cheer up, though! It’s not all gloom and doom. For some people, talking to your parents about your family’s history of tête-à-tête with The Reaper is like finding out how your going to die, which comes along with a certain amount of squeamishness. So ditch that mindset and think of it this way:
Finding out how your helix is stacked is like getting an advanced copy of the test (your health) before the big exam (the rest of your life). If you already know your weaknesses you can fight them head on, instead of trying to play catch-up once your condition is rapidly deteriorating.
If you know your dad and his dad and your uncle all had a heart attack when they were fifty. And that two of them died, and the other one started jogging and skipping the late night Kentaco Hut runs, then you can form a preemptive strike plan.
Start skipping the crap in your diet, now. Start jogging, now. Your health is like an investment portfolio. If you start early you’ll always be ahead of the late adopters, no matter how much they try and catch up. So don’t wait to get scared straight with a gurney-ride. Get in the know and then get to shoring up your weak points. Talk to your doctor about your family history so you’re both prepared for a, hopefully, long, long future of him sticking his finger in your… wallet.
