MORE than four out of five smokers want to give up cigarettes, a study has found. The figures, compiled by the Cancer Council Victoria, found 84 per cent of smokers were not happy to continue the habit, Quit Victoria executive director Todd Harper said today. Only 11 per cent of smokers were happy to continue smoking for the rest of their lives.

US and Canadian researchers quizzed 6,009 men and 8,054 women about alcohol intake and their history of depression. They found women who were binge drinkers were more likely to be clinically depressed than men. But moderate drinking was not likely to increase the risk in either sex, the journal, Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, reported.

Following a 99-day hospital stay and a surgery that lasted more than six hours, a pair of formerly conjoined twins is recovering from the operation that separated them. Before the surgery, 5-month-old conjoined twins Abygail and Madysen Fitterer, of Bismarck, N.D., were joined at the chest and shared their front chest wall.

Ashley, the daughter of two professionals in the Seattle area, never had much hope of a normal life.
Afflicted with a severe brain impairment known as static encephalopathy, she cannot walk, talk, keep her head up in bed or even swallow food. Her parents argued that “keeping her small” was the best way to improve the quality of her life, not to make life more convenient for them.
