How to Take a Punch

Have you recently pissed off a large aggressive person? Quick! Read this!
- Relax mentally. You have to relax. If you fear that the pain will be more agonizing than what it actually will be, it’ll hurt even worse.
- Breathe. When someone punches you in the stomach area, breathing out hard and swift will take all air out of your stomach so that they don’t knock the wind out of you. Tighten your abdominal muscles; it will help protect vital organs. Try not to double up or bend over. Instead, stretch backward slightly if you can/if the situation allows it.
- Visualize getting hit hard. If you can visualize it, you can take punches a lot better.
- Don’t panic! If you panic you will have a hard time recovering from a hard blow. You’ll be surprised how fast your body will recover after a hard punch.
- Have a short memory. When you get hit, try not to think about it. Not thinking about it helps the pain go away. Remember that pain is temporary and there are worse situations you could be in.
There are a lot more helpful tips after the link, but I listed the basics. Now, get out there and instigate some violence against yourself!

This person didn’t mention the elbow shield.
The elbow shield is a “cringe” movement where you basically put your palms just over your ears with your elbows together and facing forward. Then, incoming punches have a good chance to land on the point of an elbow, which hurts and can very easily break the hand.
The elbow shield also puts your hands in a great position to deliver rakes, eye-gouges, axehands and hammerfist blows. If you add knees, elbow strikes and kicks to the shins and ankles, you’ve really got something.
One last comment: the defensive mindset this article appears to be advocating is a loser’s mindset. But then I suppose standing up and taking responsibility to prevent your own ass from getting kicked, as opposed to just rolling with the punches like a coward until (hopefully) your attacker takes pity on you and goes away… that wouldn’t be very Healthbolty, would it?

The defensive mindset this post takes is so that you can take the hit and then do whatever the specific situation warrants next such as fight back, call for help or run away.
I like the elbow shield. That’s the first I’d heard that.

The elbow shield works well with a 45 degree ‘zoning’ movement to the left or right, just a step to get off the line of the attack. This also places you on the attacker’s blind side and typically opens him up for responses such as a groin slap from your right hand. Once you’re behind your opponent you can do whatever you want– ideas might be stomping on the backs of his legs to drive him down, kneeing him in the spine or elbowing him in the brainstem.
Call for help? Run away? People don’t answer calls for help anymore. And running away is a lot easier, I’m told, when the attacker’s legs are damaged.

This is all VERY helpful, especially with all the holiday shopping and family gatherings we’re in for this time of year!
