How To Deliver A Baby

by Wade Meredith on December 7th, 2006

Pregnancy

  1. Call 911 or have someone else call. If 911 is not available, try to get the process of notifying a source of help underway as soon as possible.
  2. DO NOT freak out. Childbirth is loud and messy. It’s extremely important to stay calm and to try and keep the mother as calm and comfortable as she could possibly be.
  3. Babies’ immune systems are really puny when they’re born, so wash your hands, and try and find something clean and soft (shirt, towel) to wrap the infant in once it’s out and about.
  4. This is going to make a huge mess, so spread something out (like newspapers, towels, or a shower curtain) if you have time or care.
  5. Encourage breathing on the mother’s part. You’d be surprised what you can forget to do when you’re in excruciating pain and trying to push a person out from inside of you.
  6. Water can break hours before the actual child birth. Time the contractions. When they’re less than two minutes apart, it’s go-time. Tell the mother to start pushing.
  7. Have the mother push with the contractions and rest in between if you can.
  8. Once you can see the baby’s head (it’s “crowning”), your role becomes very important. Cup the head gently and look for the umbilical chord. Make sure it’s not around the baby’s neck or head.
  9. Gently try to help ease the shoulders out one at a time. Once those are free the baby should slide the rest of the way out, so be ready to catch it.
  10. DO NOT cut the cord. It ads to blood loss for the mother and denies the baby a source of oxygen. Leave this step to the pros, if possible.
  11. Nobody slaps babies anymore. Check its mouth for obstructions, and place it skin-to-skin with the mother as soon as possible.
  12. Encourage breast feeding. This can prevent blood loss on the mother’s part and is good for the baby.
  13. Try and keep everyone warm and comfortable until help arrives or you can bring them to a hospital.

I’m not recommending anyone try this, but if you are faced with this situation maybe you’ll be able to dig some of the information you just read out of the back of your mind. The most important thing to remember is to remain calm and be a source of comfort and help to the mother.
