Easy health tip #8: It’s not just WHAT you eat, but WHEN

by Wade Meredith on July 20th, 2006

Fast Food, Good...

Simply change the time of day when you eat the most. Ingest that protein and fat at breakfast and lunch, and go easy on the dinner foods. Studies show the same foods that are safely eaten during the day apparently increase weight, blood pressure and heart disease when eaten just before nighttime sleeping. On the negative side, this may cut into your social life, as we Americans do a lot of what I like to call sport eating (and drinking), and we like to do it at night.

A radical suggestion: use restraint when eating out at night and skip the nachos appetizer or the spareribs special in favor of salad and soup. On the positive side, eating out at lunch instead of dinner will also beef up your wallet, as most lunch menus are cheaper than their dinner counter parts. And remember grandma’s adage—she supports moderation, not masochism. An occasional evening meal out may still be part of your schedule. So stop whining and make a change. Try flip-flopping heavy eating from the evening to the day for a couple of weeks and note whether it makes any difference. And be nice to your grandma.
