FDA Panel Shoots down bionic Eye

I guess I can take back those sweet “Terminator” sunglasses I bought…

After clinnical trials in 193 patients, an FDA panel has recommended against a “bionic eye” designed to help older people who have lost their central vision due to macular degeneration. It is a tiny, two-lens, telescope that is implanted in one eye socket to restore central vision while the other pre-existing organic eye would retain poriferal vision duties.
However, the implantation surgery turned out to be much more difficult than a standard lens transplant. Patients also experienced faster than normal cell-loss from the cornea lining, which required removal of the device and a cornea transplant.
