From the other side of the drill #2: Is the human bite the dirtiest in the world?

by Wade Meredith on July 3rd, 2006

Dental Sink

Me:
So when I was a counselor at a Summercamp in Springfield, MO a few years ago we had a “biter”. The situation was resolved after lots of crying and calling of parents. It came up in a conversation amongst the staff at the time that humans have one of the “dirtiest” bites in the animal kingdom. What’s that about?

Melynda (My dentist and my lovely Wife):
Well that is true. It’s not just urban legend, but it can be taken the wrong way. In this context “dirty” means tons of bacteria in your mouth. Humans tend to have the most bacteria in their mouths of all animals, except a camel. I’d bet it has something to do with us being omnivores. It probably takes a big variety of bacteria in our mouths to deal with the big variety in our diet.

Nah, if it didn’t bite you (break your skin) you should be good to go. just don’t let anyone you care about lick you.

Maybe Melynda will weigh-in here with a real answer.

Ooooh, where’d you get spit on? You might be losing that extremity/part of your face soon.
Also, camels are big carriers of AIDS.
